Traditionally we would use contactors, the workhorses for electricians – but the new age has brought us a wide range of solutions when it comes to changeover systems. Ps: Much of our posts is a work in progress so if you would like us to participate in a possible candidate for your solution…let us know…will […]

Imagine the power to the building failed…stranded you are. So you go out and purchase a generator but how to connect this to the building…such that when the mains power does return we can switch back to mains power. ===>>>OOPS…You are not logged in for this group!

There are many who has answered this question before:- Most say relays are JUST smaller brothers of contactors. Others say:- Up to a certain amperage (30/40Amp) it is a relay and beyond that it is a contactor. Others say:- In the construction, the relay coil sits on the side and a contactor it sits in […]

What is this IP rating really all about? (all) IP = International Protection Rating. It’s a cool coincidence that it could stand for Ingress Protection – for that is what I suspect most of us remember it by. My simple definition is:- A measure of how sealed ANY product is in terms of solids […]

I promise you will never forget this any more! kW = voltage x current x pf We say the better the power factor i.e. the closer to 1 the better… So: Say 34.4kW= 400V x 100amp x 0.869(pf) Say 40kW= 400V x 100amp x 1(pf) – You get more kW with bad power factor…or do […]

Why so many names for the same thing? Are all switches rated as load break switches or as isolators? In other words, if you see 10A – and that’s all we got – can we use this as a load break switch? Or is there even a difference? Linguistically switch will refer to anything with […]

So Mr. E. came back from the auction with a old “new” machine. Placed it in the factory and looks around for an electrical point to connect the machine. Ahh, here is one closest to this electrical board. Oh damn, need a circuit breaker! Excited for the new machine the electrical holesaler gets called. ===>>>OOPS…You are […]

It is a test button to confirm the operation of the earth leakage… “Duhuh (or something that sounds like that)” he says…I can see that…it is written on the unit…I ask what does it do. Does it push a lever inside and trip the unit mechanically or does it test it electrically as well…what does it […]

So a customer calls me and says his 63Amp isolator is obliterated? After further checking he found the motor was actually 30kW and this switch is rated 22kW. (26% under rated) The customer accepted it was underrated but there was something that bothered me. ===>>>OOPS…You are not logged in for this group!
